Chapter 5
The Mark and the Pulse
Lyra discovers her jagged birthmark glows in sync with Ember's breathing, a visual manifestation of their deep, inexplicable bond and a secret the Academy overlooks.
The lower stables of Aetheria Academy always carried a certain *je ne sais quoi* of damp straw, the dusty sweetness of cheap grain, and the sharp, eye-watering tang of ammonia. It was a subterranean world, a veritable basement compared to the airy, vaulted roosts of the Upper Ring, where the academy's elite housed their majestic griffins and their high-rank drakes. Right now, he was trembling, his oversized ears pinned flat against his narrow skull, a picture of pure, unadulterated fear.
Just down the row, a massive thunder-wolf, all sinew and thunderous grumbles, let out a low, rumbling growl, venting a spark of static electricity that sent a shiver down Lyra's arms. Ember whimpered, trying to wedge himself deeper into the comforting shadow of Lyra’s worn leather boots.
