Whispers of the Underdog

Valerius taunts Lyra, deliberately ruining Ember's feed. Lyra retorts, defending her beast, while a hidden connection between her birthmark and Ember's tremors deepens.

The air in the lower stables of Aetheria Academy always smelled of damp straw, cheap grain, and the bitter tang of ammonia. It was a suffocating basement compared to the airy, vaulted roosts of the Upper Ring, where the elite housed their majestic griffins and high-rank drakes. Down here, the light only filtered through high, grime-crusted grates, cutting pale bars through the floating dust. Lyra Solari knelt in the dirt, a stiff brush in her hand. She ignored the ache in her knees and focused on the small creature curling at her feet. Ember looked like a stunted fox, barely reaching Lyra’s knee, covered in dull, overlapping scales the color of cold charcoal. He was supposed to be a fire-elemental beast, but his skin lacked the bright crimson luster of his healthier kin. Right now, he was trembling, his oversized ears pinned flat against his narrow skull.

Just down the row, a massive thunder-wolf let out a low, rumbling growl, venting a spark of static electricity that made the hair on Lyra’s arms stand on end. Ember whimpered, trying to wedge himself deeper into the shadow of Lyra’s worn leather boots. "Shh, I've got you," Lyra whispered, her voice low and steady. She stopped brushing and let her fingers rest against the side of Ember’s neck. "The scales don't lie, even if the teachers do. We aren't weak; we're just waiting for the right moment to bite back." She felt the rapid, fluttering rhythm of Ember’s heartbeat. It was too fast, too frantic. Slowly, she began to draw on her own energy, pushing a wave of calm toward the small beast. As she did, a sharp, burning sensation flared under her left sleeve. The jagged birthmark on her forearm, shaped like a fractured bolt of lightning, began to itch. It always did this when she tried to soothe him. It was a physical ache, a deep-seated heat that mirrored the tiny, rhythmic pulse of Ember's heart.

The heavy oak doors at the end of the stable corridor banged open. The sudden draft of fresh air brought the scent of expensive cedarwood and ozone. The ambient noise of the stables died instantly. Even the rowdy thunder-wolf fell silent, slinking into the back of its stall. Lyra didn't need to look up to know who it was. The rhythmic, heavy click of polished riding boots announced him perfectly. Valerius Vane strode down the center aisle, flanked by two of his sycophants. He wore the midnight-blue silk tunic of the Alpha division, the silver embroidery along his collar gleaming even in the dim stable light. Behind him slithered his Grade-S dragon-kin, a magnificent beast with iridescent azure scales that shimmered like polished glass. The dragon-kin's golden eyes locked onto Ember, its slit pupils contracting with predatory interest.

"Still playing in the dirt, Solari?" Valerius paused outside Ember’s low wooden gate, looking down his nose with an expression of weary superiority. "It is a pity, really. You waste such admirable tenacity on a creature destined for the scrap heap. Logic dictates you should simply let it go."

Lyra stood up slowly, dusting off her faded teal tunic. She kept herself between Valerius's dragon-kin and Ember, who was now shivering violently. "Logic also dictates that a dragon-kin shouldn't need a golden whistle just to keep from biting its tamer's hand off," Lyra replied, her amber eyes locking onto his cold gray ones. "How is the training going, Valerius? Or is the beast still the one walking you?"

The smile vanished from Valerius’s face, replaced by a tight, dangerous line. The dragon-kin let out a low hiss, a curl of blue flame licking at the edges of its scaly snout. Valerius raised a hand, his fingers twitching toward the ornate silver whistle resting against his chest. "A clever tongue won't save you from the reality of your standing," Valerius said, his voice dropping to a smooth, venomous purr. "A trash-tier beast belongs in the trash."

With a casual flick of his boot, Valerius kicked Lyra’s wooden feed bucket. The container tipped over, spilling the expensive, specialized grain she had spent her last silver coins to secure. The dark, nutrient-rich pellets scattered into the filthy straw and muck of the aisle, ruined. Ember let out a soft, mournful whine. Valerius's companions chuckled, but Lyra didn't flinch. She stood her ground, her jaw clenched so tight her teeth ached. Beneath her sleeve, her birthmark flared with a sudden, searing heat. In that exact instant, Ember’s tiny chest swelled. A deep, resonant hum vibrated through the small beast, a sound so low and heavy that the flagstones beneath their feet seemed to tremble. It wasn't the sound of a stunted runt; it sounded like the distant rumble of an active volcano.

Valerius paused, his gray eyes narrowing as he looked at Ember. The blue dragon-kin stepped back a fraction, its crest flattening in sudden unease. "Come along," Valerius muttered, turning on his heel. "We are wasting our time in the gutter."

Lyra watched them go, her heart hammering against her ribs. She sank back down to her knees, pulling Ember into her lap. The strange, deep hum slowly subsided, leaving behind only the rapid flutter of his tiny heart. Her birthmark stopped burning, returning to a dull, persistent itch. "We're okay," she whispered, stroking his ears, though her mind was racing. That hum had felt incredibly old, and incredibly dangerous.

An hour later, Lyra walked back to the low-tier student dormitories, her hands shoved deep into her pockets. The dorms were crowded, noisy, and smelled of cheap cooking oil. When she pushed open the door to her shared room, her three roommates didn't even bother to look up from their beds. But they had left something on her small wooden desk. It was a folded piece of parchment, sealed with the heavy black wax of the Academy Administration. Lyra’s stomach dropped. She tore it open, her eyes scanning the sharp, bureaucratic handwriting.

*Notice of Placement: Student Lyra Solari. Due to a failing cumulative beast-performance index, you have been assigned to the lowest tier for the upcoming Mid-Term Trials. You are hereby registered for the Survival Trial in the Outer Dead Zone.*

Lyra’s breath caught in her throat. The Survival Trial. It was a death sentence for low-rankers. But the final paragraph of the letter was what made her blood run entirely cold.

*Pursuant to Academy Code 14-B, any beast failing to achieve a Grade-D ranking during the Mid-Term Trials will be deemed a genetic contaminant. To preserve the purity of the state's taming lineages, all failed beasts will be immediately confiscated and culled.*

"They aren't just trying to fail me," Lyra whispered, her voice shaking as she stared at the paper. "They want to kill him." Across the room, one of her roommates let out a mocking laugh, whispering something to the others. Lyra ignored them. She pulled up her left sleeve, staring at the jagged birthmark on her forearm. It was glowing faintly now, a dull amber light that throbbed in perfect, rhythmic synchronization with the soft breathing of Ember, who lay sleeping on her coat at the foot of the bed. The academy thought they were purging a defective failure. But as Lyra looked from her glowing skin to her sleeping beast, she knew they had no idea what they were actually unleashing.
