Chapter 8

The Weary Conqueror of the Backyard

Exhausted but beaming, Ashtin proudly takes his place as the 'cabin boy.' He's given a small wooden spoon to 'stir the stew' and instructed to stay out of the way. He diligently performs his duties, his muddy pajamas a testament to his epic journey. His parents, Tonya and Ashtin's Dad (Amber), watch from the porch, a mixture of relief and amusement on their faces. Ashtin's 'great escape' was a series of comical disasters, but it led him exactly where he wanted to be. As the sun begins to set, casting a golden glow over the backyard, Ashtin, slumped against a deck chair, drifts off to sleep, a small, contented smile on his face. He may have caused a minor apocalypse of cereal and mud, but he conquered the pirate game, proving his independence, one disaster at a time.

From us. And then managed to… well, to be Ashtin.”

Ashtin’s Dad, Amber, chuckled, leaning back in his chair. “He’s got a certain flair for the dramatic, I’ll give him that. And a talent for unintentional chaos. Honestly, Tonya, that cereal incident alone was worth the price of admission.”
