Chapter 4
The Cereal Catastrophe
Ashtin's escape begins with a strategic detour: the pantry. He believes a pirate needs sustenance for his daring mission, and the allure of sugary cereal is too strong to resist. His plan involves scaling the towering shelves like a seasoned mountaineer, reaching for the colorful boxes. However, his small stature and the slippery nature of cardboard prove formidable obstacles. With a mighty heave, he manages to dislodge a cascade of cereal boxes. They tumble down in a thunderous, sugary avalanche, raining down on Ashtin and the pantry floor. The resulting mess is spectacular: a sticky, crunchy, multi-colored disaster zone. The loud clatter and Ashtin's subsequent bewildered cries alert his parents, who rush to the scene, their faces a mixture of alarm and resigned amusement. The great escape has hit its first, albeit sticky, snag.
Ashtin, a pint-sized buccaneer in training, surveyed the battlefield of the living room. The older kids, Laison, Emma, and a couple of their usual accomplices, were deep in the throes of their pirate game. Ashtin, all of three years old and brimming with the unwavering conviction of a seasoned explorer, was determined to join their ranks. He’d tried his usual tactics: the wide-eyed stare, the pathetic whimper, even a valiant attempt at a pirate growl that sounded more like a startled kitten. All met with the same dismissive wave of Laison’s hand.
“Go play with your blocks, Ashtin,” Laison had commanded, his voice dripping with the authority of a captain who’d clearly never encountered a toddler determined to board his ship. “Pirates need to be… big. And scary. You’re just… small. And drooly.”
Emma, ever the pragmatist, had added, “And you always eat the treasure. Last time, you ate the gold coins. They were made of chocolate, but still.”
