The air, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, pressed in on Kael. It had been days since the screams of his village had faded, days since the shadowed thing with eyes like dying embers had spoken his name. Days since he’d fled into the suffocating embrace of the Whispering Woods, with only the cryptic pronouncements of the stranger, Lyra, for company. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a jolt of icy dread through him. He was no longer just Kael, the markless pariah. “They’re close,” Lyra murmured, her voice barely a whisper, yet it carried the weight of certainty. She stopped, her head cocked, listening to a symphony of sounds Kael couldn’t decipher. The chirping of crickets, the distant hoot of an owl, the sigh of the wind through the ancient trees – to him, it was the usual night chorus of the wild. To Lyra, it was a language of approaching danger.
