Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the crumbling dome of the ancient structure. Kael breathed it in, the scent of ages, of stone that had witnessed the rise and fall of empires, of magic that had long since faded into myth. Beside him, the stranger, Elara, moved with an unnerving grace, her eyes scanning the decaying frescoes that adorned the walls. They depicted figures with glowing symbols etched onto their skin, hands outstretched, channeling ethereal light. These were the Fate Marks, the very things that had made Kael an outcast, a pariah in a world that defined itself by those very markings.

“They look so… serene,” Kael murmured, tracing the outline of a warrior etched into the stone with a reverent, yet wary, finger. The figure’s mark, a stylized sunburst, pulsed with an imagined warmth. “Like they knew their place, their purpose.”

Elara stopped before a particularly large fresco, her gaze fixed on a central figure whose mark was a complex, swirling pattern Kael had never seen before. It was unlike any Fate Mark he’d encountered, even in the hushed tales of forbidden lore. “Purpose is a cage, Kael,” she said, her voice low, carrying an echo of the chamber’s vastness. “And these marks, they were not born of benevolence.”
