The air, once thin and sharp with the memory of smoke, grew heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and something else—something ancient and almost sweet, like decaying blossoms. Kael walked, his boots crunching on a path that had long since been reclaimed by moss and creeping ivy. Beside him, the stranger moved with a quiet grace, their presence a constant, subtle pressure that Kael was still struggling to understand. Each step felt like a step further away from the smoldering pyre of his former life and deeper into a mystery that clung to him like a shroud.
He glanced at the stranger. Their face, perpetually shadowed by the hood of their worn cloak, offered no clues. Even their voice, when they spoke, was a low murmur, a sound that seemed to blend with the rustling leaves and the distant calls of unseen birds.
“Are you certain this is the way?” Kael asked, his voice rough from disuse and the lingering grit of ash. He hugged himself, a shiver tracing its way down his spine, though the evening air was not particularly cold. It was the unease that chilled him, a sensation that had become a constant companion since the creature had descended upon his village.
