The air in the cavern was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and metallic, like old blood spilled on stone. Kael’s breath hitched, each inhale a struggle against the oppressive weight of the place. Beside him, Elara’s hand tightened on his arm, her knuckles white against his worn tunic. Even in the dim, flickering light cast by the strange, glowing fungi clinging to the walls, he could see the fear etched on her face, a mirror of his own churning anxiety.

They had followed the stranger, Lyra, deeper into the earth, the path twisting and turning until the familiar world above felt like a distant dream. Lyra, ever the enigma, had led them with an unnerving calm, her eyes gleaming with an intensity that Kael couldn’t decipher. She spoke of a nexus, a place where the veil between worlds thinned, a place of power that could either destroy or save them. The words had been a desperate whisper, a gamble born from the ashes of their flight.

The chamber they now stood in was vast, its ceiling lost in shadow. At its center, a stone altar pulsed with a faint, internal luminescence, a soft, ethereal blue that seemed to drink the surrounding darkness. Strange symbols, unlike any Kael had ever seen, were carved into its surface, swirling and interlocking like a forgotten language. Lyra had explained that this was a place of sacrifice, a conduit.
