Chapter 13
Betrayal and Trust
An ally is revealed to be a spy for the King, forcing Kael to question who he can truly trust on his perilous journey.
The chill of the forest floor seeped through Kael’s thin tunic, a constant, unwelcome companion to the gnawing hunger in his belly. Each rustle of leaves, each snap of a twig, sent a fresh wave of adrenaline through him, a familiar dance with fear that had been his sole partner for eighteen years. The stranger, Elara, moved with a silent grace, her steps barely disturbing the fallen pine needles. She had found him, or rather, he had stumbled into her path, a broken thing salvaged from the ashes of his life. She spoke in riddles, weaving tales of ancient powers and forgotten truths, her words a balm to the raw wound of his existence, yet tinged with an unsettling ambiguity.
"The path ahead winds through treacherous ground," Elara had murmured earlier that day, her voice a low hum against the sighing wind. They had been traversing a dense thicket, the canopy so thick it choked out the midday sun, plunging them into perpetual twilight. "The King’s hounds are tireless, and the whispers of the Hollow King grow louder with each passing moon."
Kael had merely grunted, his focus on the gnarled roots that threatened to trip him, on the sheer, unyielding effort of putting one foot in front of the other. The creature that had razed his village, the one that had called him “The Last Flame,” was a phantom that haunted his waking hours, but the King’s soldiers, their scarred, marked faces a testament to their supposed destiny, were a far more tangible threat.
