The air in the hidden alcove was thick with the scent of damp earth and something ancient, something that whispered of forgotten rituals and slumbering gods. Kael, his muscles still humming with the raw exertion of their flight, watched the stranger with a mixture of suspicion and a desperate, burgeoning hope. The stranger, whose name Kael still didn’t know, moved with a quiet grace that spoke of long practice, their face obscured by the cowl of their cloak, but their voice, when they spoke, was a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate in Kael’s very bones.
“You seek to understand why this happened, why your village burned, why you are hunted,” the stranger said, their words not a question, but a statement of fact. They had stopped by a small, trickling stream that snaked through the ruins, its water reflecting the sliver of moon peeking through a crack in the cavern ceiling. “You feel the injustice, the wrongness of it all, like a stone in your gut.”
Kael nodded, unable to form words. The creature, the *thing* that had annihilated his home, had spoken to him. It had called him ‘The Last Flame.’ The words still echoed in his mind, a terrifying prophecy he couldn't decipher.
