The parameter was constant, but the equation kept shifting. I sat at my desk in the paperless office, the screen glowing like a still lake at dusk, and I thought of Trakai again—not the castle, not the tourists, but the water itself. How it held the sky without question, how the line between reflection and reality dissolved at the edges. That was what I wanted now: a stillness that could hold the variables without breaking.
The numbers on the spreadsheet blurred into meaningless rows. a and b constants, the lecturer had said, but they never stayed constant in real life. The economy was a living thing, breathing through inflation, debt, the quiet panic of people like me who had traded paper for pixels and still felt the weight of something missing. I remembered my grandmother’s hands, calloused from years of sewing, counting out coins on the kitchen table. She had understood value in a way I could not replicate. For her, par value was the price of bread, the cost of a bus ticket to the market. For me, it was a line in a ledger, a ghost in the machine.
I closed the laptop and walked to the window. Vilnius hummed below—cars, voices, the distant clatter of construction. But in my mind, I was already at the lake. The parameters of my life had been set long ago: born here, raised elsewhere, returned to find a home that was both familiar and foreign. The equation of belonging had too many unknowns. Yet something in me refused to solve for x and be done.
