The air in the courtyard had a particular taste that morning—a blend of damp stone, cigarette smoke from the window above, and the faint, sweet rot of fallen linden blossoms. I stood by the bicycle rack, watching a man in a worn corduroy jacket argue with a parking attendant about a voucher neither of them seemed to possess. It was a conversation built on gestures: palms raised, fingers counting invisible numbers, a shrug that traveled from shoulder to earlobe. They spoke in the language of paper that does not exist.
I had left my own apartment without a single document. The keys in my pocket felt like a fragile lie. For weeks, I had been tracing accounts, receipts, margins of error, the quiet arithmetic of belonging. But here, in the stone courtyard of the old city, the numbers meant nothing. The man in the jacket finally gave up, his hands dropping to his sides like dead leaves. He walked away, and the parking attendant sat back on her stool, lighting a cigarette, perfectly at peace.
I thought of the lake. Of Trakai, where the water had no columns, no balances, no audit. The island castle had stood there for centuries, brick by brick, no receipt required. Why then did I feel so naked without a slip of paper? Why did the absence of a voucher make my bones uneasy?
