The pawnshop on Didžioji Street exhaled a breath of old coins and damp wool, the air thick with the ghost of a thousand small surrenders. The owner’s face was a ledger, each line a transaction he’d seen a hundred times before. He took my grandmother’s silver brooch—her mother’s, and her mother’s before that—and held it under the magnifying glass, the light catching the filigree like a spiderweb of memory.

“Not silver,” he said, setting it down with a click. “Pewter. But the work is old. I can give you thirty euros.”

I wanted to tell him about the afternoon she wore it to the market in Ukmergė, how the clasp caught the light and she said it was her mother’s, which was her mother’s before that. How the pin had held her collar together during a summer storm, and later, how she’d touched it while telling me about the war. But the words felt like debts I could not pay—each one an installment on a grief I was still financing. I nodded.
