The distant laughter of departing families was a gentle hum beneath the symphony of his own racing thoughts. Luna, her face a picture of serene contentment, leaned back against the soft, damp sand of their chosen spot by the now-still wave pool. Her eyes, reflecting the twilight, sparkled with a shared joy that made Blaze’s chest ache with a familiar, bittersweet longing.

This was it. The perfect moment. The air, still carrying the faint scent of chlorine and sunscreen, felt charged with an unspoken promise. He’d spent the entire day navigating thrilling slides and lazy rivers, all the while navigating the treacherous currents of his own heart. Every shared laugh, every playful splash, every fleeting touch had been a step closer to this precipice, this chance to finally cast aside the heavy cloak of his secret.

He opened his mouth, a carefully rehearsed confession ready to spill onto the warm evening air. He wanted to tell her how her smile could outshine the brightest sun, how her energy was a force of nature he found utterly captivating, how the thought of her filled his days with a quiet, persistent joy. He wanted to tell her that ‘best friends’ felt like a beautiful, yet woefully insufficient, label for the way he felt when he looked at her.
