The air in the small, smoke-tinged kitchen of Mrs. Petrova was thick with the scent of simmering cabbage and something else, something earthy and profound that Amy couldn't quite place. It was a smell that spoke not of abundance, but of making do, of stretching meager ingredients into sustenance. This was the secret fear that gnawed at her, the dread that the hard-won wisdom of generations was slipping away, lost in the ease of modern life. Oma Becker’s recipes, once so vibrant in her imagination, were now revealing their deeper layers, their origins not in celebration, but in necessity.
