The air in the hall hummed with a nervous energy, a palpable blend of hushed anticipation and the faint rustle of programs. Antonio, swathed in an oversized coat that did little to hide his trembling frame, clutched the worn edges of his sheet music. His skin felt clammy, his breath shallow, each inhale a tiny, painful victory. The fever, a relentless thief, had crept in during the night, stealing his strength and painting his vision with a hazy, unsettling glow. He could feel his mother’s worried gaze upon him, a silent plea for him to retreat, to seek the comfort of his bed rather than this brightly lit stage. His father stood a little apart, his jaw set, a familiar mixture of disapproval and, perhaps, a flicker of reluctant pride warring in his eyes.

Maestro Rossi, his face a roadmap of kindly wrinkles, placed a firm, warm hand on Antonio’s shoulder. "Breathe, my boy," he murmured, his voice a low rumble that somehow cut through the din. "Let the music be your breath. It will carry you." Antonio nodded, a weak gesture of acknowledgement. He knew the Maestro understood. He saw it in the gentle crinkle around his eyes, in the knowing tilt of his head. The Maestro’s belief was a sturdy anchor in the churning sea of his own fear.

The announcer’s voice boomed, announcing the next performer, the name echoing through the hall like a pronouncement. Antonio’s name. A wave of dizziness washed over him, and he swayed slightly. His mother gasped, a small, choked sound, but before she could reach him, Maestro Rossi was there, his presence a steady force. "You are ready," he said, his voice firm but gentle. "This is your moment, Antonio. Sing your song."
