The hushed anticipation of the hall pressed in on Antonio, a tangible weight that settled over his already feverish brow. Each breath felt like a small, painful victory, a testament to the battle raging within him. The night before, the vibrant energy that usually coursed through him, a direct conduit to the music that lived in his soul, had flickered and died, replaced by a gnawing ache and a chilling sweat. Now, as the murmurs of the crowd filtered through the heavy velvet curtains, a wave of dread washed over him, threatening to drown the fragile flame of his ambition.

He sat backstage, a small, solitary figure amidst the bustling activity of other competitors and stagehands. The air, thick with the scent of polished wood and nervous energy, did little to soothe his frayed nerves. His hands, usually so nimble and sure on the keys, felt clumsy and cold. He traced the worn seams of his waistcoat, a familiar comfort that now seemed to offer little solace against the growing unease.

Then, a shadow fell over him. He looked up, his vision swimming slightly, to see the kindly, lined face of Maestro Rossi peering down at him. The Maestro’s eyes, usually twinkling with amusement, held a depth of concern that both frightened and reassured him.
