The afternoon sun, usually a cheerful splash of gold across the cobbled piazza, seemed to cast long, mournful shadows today. Antonio, clutching his worn satchel tighter, felt a familiar knot of apprehension tightening in his stomach. The usual boisterous energy of the town square was muted, a hushed reverence settling as he approached the weathered stone building that housed the conservatory. It was here, in the echoing halls where melodies bloomed and withered, that he felt both the most alive and the most vulnerable. His father’s words, a constant refrain, replayed in his mind: "Music is a hobby, Antonio, not a life. A man needs a trade, something solid." Yet, the melodies that danced in his head, the urgent need to translate them into tangible sound, felt more solid than any ledger or blueprint.

He pushed open the heavy oak door, the scent of aged wood and beeswax polish enveloping him like a familiar embrace. The air hummed with the faint, distant strains of violins and pianos, a symphony of ambition and practice. Antonio navigated the labyrinthine corridors, his heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against his ribs. He was here for a lesson, a clandestine rendezvous with a world his parents deemed frivolous. His current tutor, a kind but aging woman with nimble fingers and a patient smile, had spoken of a new instructor, a Maestro Rossi, who possessed an uncanny ear and a reputation for spotting true genius.

He found the designated practice room, a small space bathed in the soft light filtering through a tall, arched window. The piano, an imposing ebony beast, dominated the room. Sitting at its bench, his back to Antonio, was a man of indeterminate age, his hair a distinguished silver, his posture radiating an air of quiet authority. He was not playing, but rather, his hands were resting on the keys, his head tilted as if listening to an invisible orchestra.
