Chapter 7
Dr. Thorne's Skepticism
Scientist Dr. Aris Thorne detects the strange signals but dismisses Antoinette's claims of a sentient house and interdimensional travel as fanciful.
Dr. Aris Thorne adjusted the dials on his equipment, the low hum of the machinery a familiar lullaby in his sterile laboratory. For weeks, he’d been tracking an anomaly, a peculiar energy signature that pulsed erratically across the city, unlike anything he’d ever cataloged. It was faint, almost imperceptible, but persistent. He’d initially dismissed it as a sophisticated piece of rogue technology, perhaps a new form of atmospheric interference. But the readings were too… patterned. Too deliberate.
He zoomed in on the readings, his brow furrowed in concentration. The signal originated from a quiet residential street, a cluster of unassuming houses nestled beneath the dappled shade of mature oak trees. It was there, in that mundane setting, that the extraordinary seemed to be unfolding. His instruments had picked up a secondary, more localized emission, a harmonic resonance that seemed to emanate from a single dwelling, a house that, by all outward appearances, was as ordinary as its neighbors.
He sighed, running a hand through his already disheveled hair. The data was compelling, undeniably so, but the interpretation… that was where the trouble lay. His mind, trained in the rigorous logic of science, balked at the notion of anything truly… sentient. He’d heard whispers, of course, hushed conversations among his colleagues about a young woman, Antoinette, who claimed an uncanny connection with zoo animals. He’d even seen a brief, almost dismissive mention in a local news segment about her unique ability to calm distressed creatures. Fascinating, in a fringe-science sort of way, but hardly evidence of interdimensional communication.
