The air in the lion enclosure was thick with the scent of dry earth, sun-baked fur, and something else, something Antoinette couldn’t quite place. It was a primal smell, ancient and powerful, and it seemed to hum with a low, resonant energy that mirrored the thrumming beneath her own skin. She’d found herself drawn here more and more lately, a strange magnet pulling her towards the king of the beasts. Today, however, the pull felt different, urgent.
Leo, the magnificent old lion, lay sprawled on a sun-drenched rock, his mane a burnished halo against the bleached sky. His eyes, the color of molten gold, were usually half-closed in regal repose, but now they were wide open, fixed on Antoinette. There was a depth in their gaze that went beyond mere animal instinct; it was a knowing, a silent conversation that flowed between them, a language spoken not with words, but with the very essence of their beings.
“He knows,” a voice whispered in Antoinette’s mind, not her own, but the deep, rumbling resonance that emanated from Leo. It was a thought, a feeling, a pure, unadulterated knowing that bypassed her ears and settled directly into her consciousness.
