Her hands, usually so steady when sketching the intricate patterns of a gorilla’s brow or the thoughtful gaze of an orangutan, trembled slightly as she approached the enclosure.
Koko, the silverback gorilla whose quiet dignity had always spoken volumes to Antoinette, met her at the barrier, his massive head tilted. His usual gruff rumble was softer today, tinged with a concern that mirrored her own. He wasn’t just an animal; he was a presence, a protector, and Antoinette felt a surge of gratitude for his steady strength.
“They’re… agitated, aren’t they, Koko?” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper. The usual playful squabbles and grooming sessions were muted, replaced by a collective watchfulness. The younger gorillas kept their eyes fixed on the perimeter, their knuckles resting on the ground with a tension that was anything but casual.
