Antoinette stood on the worn wooden platform, the morning sun warm on her face, but her gaze was fixed upwards, following the impossibly long neck of Gerald, the giraffe. He was a creature of serene majesty, his patterned coat a tapestry of earthy hues, his large, liquid eyes holding a wisdom that seemed to stretch back through centuries. Today, Gerald seemed different. There was a restlessness in his gentle swaying, a subtle tension in the way he held his head. Antoinette felt it too, a prickle of unease that had settled over her since the house had begun its unsettling hum.

“Gerald?” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper against the chirping of birds and the distant rumble of the city. She reached out a hand, her fingers brushing against the coarse, warm hair of his leg. It was as if she were touching a living monument, solid and ancient.

Gerald lowered his head, his muzzle nudging her shoulder with a surprising gentleness. His breath was warm and smelled faintly of hay and something else… something wild and green. Then, it came. Not a sound, not a thought in the human sense, but a feeling, a vast, panoramic awareness that bloomed in Antoinette’s mind. It was like seeing the world from a mountaintop, the familiar landscape stretching out in every direction, but with an added dimension she hadn't perceived before.
