The air in Antoinette’s quiet suburban neighborhood had always hummed with a gentle, familiar rhythm. Evenings settled like warm blankets, punctuated by the distant laughter of children and the comforting drone of lawnmowers. It was a chill, not of temperature, but of the soul, a creeping unease that settled in the pit of Antoinette’s stomach.

She first noticed it with Barnaby, her usually placid golden retriever. He’d been restless, his tail tucked low, his big brown eyes wide with a fear that seemed to have no source. Mr. Henderson, the retired history teacher who spent his afternoons meticulously tending his rose garden, had snapped at a passing cyclist for daring to ring their bell too loudly. Even the boisterous flock of sparrows that usually squabbled over crumbs on Antoinette’s porch seemed subdued, their chirps replaced by anxious flutters.
