Antoinette traced the condensation on the cool glass of the enclosure, her gaze fixed on the intelligent, dark eyes of Koko, the chimpanzee. Koko, usually a whirlwind of playful energy, was unusually still, her brow furrowed in a way that mirrored Antoinette’s own contemplation. The air in the primate house, usually alive with chirps, hoots, and the faint, earthy scent of straw and fruit, felt heavy, charged with an unspoken understanding.
“It’s like a language, Koko,” Antoinette murmured, her voice barely a whisper. “But it’s not words. It’s… a feeling. A pattern. And it comes from the house.”
Koko chattered softly, a series of low grunts and clicks that Antoinette had learned to interpret over the years.
