The grand hall buzzed with the usual polite murmur of courtly life, but for me, it was a stage set with a new, unsettling drama. Isolde, the supposed heroine of this tale, had finally, irrevocably, acknowledged my absence from her carefully orchestrated affections. My decision to step off the prescribed path, to shed the skin of the second male lead destined to orbit her like a forgotten moon, had clearly rattled her. And as the universe would have it, her gaze, once fixed on the impetuous Prince Alaric, was now flickering, erratically, towards the man who held my heart captive: King Theron.

I watched her from across the room, a delicate porcelain doll with a heart of sharpened flint. Her smile, a practiced curve of her lips, seemed to stretch a little too wide when Theron’s name was mentioned, her eyes, usually demurely downcast, now held a predatory gleam. She was like a moth drawn to a flame, but instead of being consumed, she intended to wield its heat for her own purposes.

Theron, bless his regal, stoic heart, remained largely unperturbed. He was a man of quiet power, his presence a steady anchor in the tempest of courtly intrigue. He met Isolde’s advances with a polite, almost detached, courtesy that I knew, from my own burgeoning experience, was laced with a subtle amusement. He saw through her, just as I did. But for Isolde, it seemed, this was merely a new challenge, a higher stake in the game she was so desperately playing.
