Chapter 6
Unexpected Conversations
Elias and Theron begin to interact. Theron is intrigued by Elias's sharp wit and unusual perspective, sensing a depth beyond the novel's characterization.
The gilded carriage swayed gently, a comforting rhythm against the thrumming anxiety in my chest. Outside, the sprawling estates of the royal family blurred into a tapestry of verdant fields and ancient oaks. Inside, however, the air was thick with an unspoken tension, a quiet hum of anticipation that had settled over me since my abrupt departure from the grand ducal estate. My original plan, a swift and discreet exit from the entire convoluted plot, had somehow morphed into a rather awkward, albeit luxurious, carriage ride with the very man I was trying so desperately to avoid – King Theron.
It wasn't that I didn't appreciate the finer things. My previous life, spent hunched over spreadsheets in a windowless office, had certainly lacked this kind of opulent transport. But the opulent transport was now carrying me towards a confrontation, or at least, a prolonged interaction with the King himself. The novel, bless its dramatic heart, had painted Theron as a figure of stoic authority, a distant, formidable ruler whose primary concern was the stability of his kingdom and the well-being of his younger brother, the designated male lead, Alaric. He was also, inconveniently, incredibly handsome. Tall, with a noble bearing and eyes the color of a stormy sea, he possessed an aura of quiet power that was both intimidating and, I had to admit, profoundly attractive.
"You seem preoccupied, Elias," Theron's voice, a deep baritone that resonated with authority, broke the silence. He sat opposite me, his gaze steady, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on his lips. He hadn't been the one to initiate this carriage ride, but rather, had graciously offered it when I'd, rather flusteredly, mentioned my need to travel to the capital. It was a gesture of goodwill, I supposed, or perhaps a way to keep a closer eye on the second male lead who had suddenly become so… unpredictable.
