The air in Theron’s private study was thick with the scent of old parchment and polished wood, a comforting aroma that usually soothed my frayed nerves. Tonight, however, it felt like a cage, trapping me with the weight of a secret that had been gnawing at my soul since I’d woken up in this world. Theron sat opposite me, a goblet of deep red wine cradled in his hand, his gaze steady and unreadable. He hadn’t pressed me, not directly, but his silence was a potent invitation, a silent acknowledgment that something was different about me, something beyond the usual melancholy that plagued the second male lead of a poorly written romance novel.
“You… you know,” I began, my voice barely a whisper, the words catching in my throat. I cleared it, trying to find a semblance of composure. “You know I’m not… entirely what I seem.”
Theron took a slow sip of his wine, his eyes never leaving mine. A faint smile touched his lips, a subtle curve that spoke volumes more than any grand pronouncement. “Elias,” he said, his voice a low rumble that always sent a tremor through me, “you carry a weariness that no young man, even one burdened by the woes of a kingdom, should possess. And there are moments, fleeting as a butterfly’s wing, when your eyes hold a knowledge that predates your years. I have observed.”
