Gardening Gold: Veggie Scraps Reimagined

The sun, bless its golden heart, was doing its very best to peek through the kitchen window, casting dappled light onto the worn linoleum floor. It was a Tuesday, which in my world, means it’s officially ‘Scrap-tacular Tuesday.’ Or at least, that’s what I’d decided to call it. Rex, bless his patient soul, was already settled at the little breakfast nook table, a steaming mug of coffee cradled between his hands, a familiar, comforting sight. He’d learned, through many a near-disaster and a few actual ones, that a well-fed Rex is a happy Rex, and a happy Rex is essential to my own sanity, especially when the fur babies are in full, chaotic swing.

Speaking of the fur babies, a symphony of excited yips and the frantic patter of tiny paws announced their arrival. Anna, my ever-optimistic Chiweenie, a blur of tan and black, skidded to a halt at my feet, her tail a frantic metronome of pure joy. Beside her, Bartholomew “Barty” Higgins, my perpetually unimpressed Chihuahua, offered a more reserved, though equally enthusiastic, wiggle. They knew Tuesday meant something special, a deviation from the usual humdrum of chasing squirrels in their dreams and demanding belly rubs. Today, it meant garden magic.

“Alright, you two,” I announced, clapping my hands together, a little too loudly for Barty’s delicate sensibilities. He let out a small, indignant huff. “Today, we’re turning our kitchen discards into garden gold!”
