The air in the Whispering Woods hummed with an energy that was both exciting and a little bit scary. Amir’s team, their faces flushed with a mixture of exertion and anticipation, stumbled through a tangle of ferns and thick bushes. They had been so sure of their path, following the crumpled map Ms. Evans had given them, but somewhere along the way, the familiar trails had vanished, replaced by a dense, untamed wilderness. Sara, usually quick with a joke, was quiet, her eyes wide as she scanned the unfamiliar trees. Ben, who had been boasting about their chances of winning just minutes before, now looked a bit pale, his usual playful grin replaced by a worried frown.

“I think we’re lost,” Ben whispered, his voice barely audible above the rustling leaves.

Amir’s heart gave a little lurch. Lost. The word echoed in his mind, a cold, unwelcome guest. He glanced at his friends. They were looking at him, their trust a heavy weight on his shoulders. He remembered the playground teasing, the snickers when he’d proudly declared his name meant “leader.” They thought it was just a silly word, but Amir had always felt a spark of something more, a quiet conviction that his name held a special power. Now, more than ever, he needed that power to be real.
