Chapter 16
The Break
Sakura ends her engagement with Aiko, facing the fallout and societal judgment, but finding a sense of liberation in her honesty.
The air in Sakura's small apartment, usually a haven of quiet contemplation, felt thick with an unspoken tension, a prelude to a storm that had been gathering for weeks. Sunlight, usually a gentle caress through the lace curtains, now seemed to illuminate every dust mote dancing with the weight of her decision. Sakura met his gaze, her own eyes, usually so clear and bright, clouded with a sorrow that was both ancient and new. The words felt like stones in her throat, heavy and sharp. "Aiko," she started, her voice barely a whisper, "I… I can't marry you."
