The Weaver's Threads
The world shimmered again, not with the soft, hazy glow of before, but with a sharp, almost brittle light. Elara blinked, her fingers tightening around the cool plastic of the amber sunglasses. She was standing in what looked like her own bedroom, yet it was subtly, unnervingly wrong. The posters on her wall were different, depicting bands she’d never heard of. Her bookshelf was crammed with titles that felt alien, and a small, brightly colored robot sat on her desk, whirring softly. This wasn’t her room. This was a room belonging to another Elara.
Anya. The name whispered in her mind, a gentle echo from the last time she’d worn the glasses. Anya, the girl who was also Elara, but with a life that had taken a different turn. Elara took a tentative step, her heart thumping a nervous rhythm against her ribs. She looked down at her hands – they were her hands, yet they felt… different. A faint scar on her left thumb seemed to be missing.
“Hello?” she called out, her voice sounding strangely small in the unfamiliar quiet. The whirring of the robot on the desk paused.
