Alex traced the condensation ring on the worn cafeteria table, the familiar hum of lunch chatter a distant drone. For the past few days, a persistent knot had tightened in their chest, a quiet reminder of the promise that had begun to fray. It wasn't a conscious decision, not at first, but a slow drift, like a boat nudged imperceptibly from its mooring. Maya’s boisterous laughter, the urgent texts from study groups, the sheer momentum of existing friendships – they had all pulled Alex away, leaving Sam adrift in the wake.

The memory of Sam’s hesitant smile on that first day, the hopeful flicker in their eyes as Alex had offered that earnest, heartfelt promise, felt like a small, sharp stone under Alex’s skin. It was a promise born of genuine good intention, a sincere desire to be the kind of person who made others feel welcome, seen. But life, Alex was learning, had a way of making good intentions feel like fragile glass, easily shattered by the everyday rough and tumble.

Today, however, was different. Today, the knot had finally spurred Alex into action. It started with a simple, deliberate choice. Instead of joining Maya and her usual entourage, Alex walked towards the quieter corner where Sam often sat, a book a shield against the bustling world.
