The fluorescent lights of the hallway hummed with a familiar, monotonous drone, a sound Alex usually found comforting, a backdrop to the vibrant chaos of school life. Today, though, the hum felt like a low thrum of anxiety beneath their skin. Each step Alex took felt heavy, weighted with the unspoken, the undone, the deeply regretted. Sam was sketching, a pencil moving with a delicate, focused grace that Alex envied. For a moment, Alex just stood there, a silent observer, the weight of their own failings pressing down. Sam looked so small, so self-contained, a world Alex had promised to be a part of, and then, without even realizing it, had begun to exclude.
