Chapter 7
A Gentle Nudge
Mr. Harrison notices Sam's withdrawn demeanor and Alex's distractedness. He shares a quiet, encouraging word with Alex about the importance of follow-through and empathy, planting a seed of realization.
The fluorescent lights of the classroom hummed a low, constant song, a sound Alex usually found comforting, a backdrop to the predictable rhythm of school life. Today, however, it felt more like a drone, buzzing with an undercurrent of something Alex couldn't quite name. Sam sat a few rows ahead, hunched over a textbook, their shoulders a little too tight, a little too drawn in. It was a familiar feeling, a prickle of unease that had been growing for weeks, like a stray thread snagging on a favorite sweater.
Mr. Harrison, bless his perpetually kind heart, was at the front of the room, his voice a steady, measured cadence as he explained the intricacies of photosynthesis. It was a brief, almost imperceptible shift, but Alex felt it, a gentle weight of observation settling upon them.
Later, as the bell signaled the end of class, a small group of students clustered around Mr. Harrison’s desk, eager for his attention. Alex, usually one of the first to engage, found themselves lingering by their desk, gathering their books with a deliberate slowness. Maya, ever the social butterfly, was already weaving through the departing students, her bright laughter echoing down the hallway. She caught Alex’s eye and gave them a beckoning wave. “Hey! We're heading to get smoothies, want to join?”
