The hum of the classroom was a familiar, comforting sound to Alex, a gentle backdrop to the unfolding day. Sunlight, filtered through the tall arched windows of Mr. Harrison’s history class, painted stripes of gold across the worn wooden desks. Today’s lesson was on ancient societies and their intricate systems of governance, a topic Alex usually found fascinating. But a restless energy thrummed beneath the surface, a subtle dissonance that had been growing for weeks.

Mr. Harrison, a man whose kindness seemed to radiate from his very being, stood at the front of the room, his voice a steady, warm anchor.
