A Test of Friendship

Alex is tasked with a significant project and is deeply focused. Sam tries to reach out, but Alex is too preoccupied. Sam feels completely overlooked, the initial warmth of Alex's promise fading into disappointment.

The scent of old paper and freshly sharpened pencils was usually a comfort to Alex, a familiar blanket woven from countless school days. But today, it felt more like a heavy shroud. The biology project, a behemoth of a task involving a meticulously detailed model of the human circulatory system, had taken root in Alex’s mind and was slowly, inexorably, consuming all available space. Diagrams, labels, arteries, veins – they swirled in a constant, buzzing loop, eclipsing everything else.

Alex hunched over the kitchen table at home, surrounded by a chaotic landscape of cardboard, pipe cleaners, and half-dried paint. Maya’s voice, bright and bubbly, crackled through the phone speaker, a stark contrast to the quiet intensity that Alex was trying to maintain. "Seriously, Alex, you *have* to come to the movie night! Everyone’s going. It’s going to be epic!"

Alex sighed, carefully bending a red pipe cleaner into a delicate curve. "I wish I could, Maya, I really do. But this project is… it’s huge. Mr. Harrison said it’s a quarter of our grade." The words felt hollow, even to Alex. Maya’s invitations
