The fluorescent lights of Northwood High hummed their perpetual, low-grade song, a sound that had become as familiar to Sam as the beat of their own heart. Yet, lately, that hum felt less like background noise and more like a persistent, dull ache. It had been weeks since Alex, with that bright, earnest look in their eyes, had clasped Sam’s hand and whispered, “Don’t worry, I’ve got your back. We’ll figure this out together.” The words, once a beacon of hope, now felt like distant echoes, fading with each passing day.

Sam sat at a corner table in the bustling cafeteria, the clatter of trays and the cacophony of adolescent voices swirling around them like a never-ending storm. They picked at their sandwich, the crusts tasting like sawdust. Alex was across the room, a whirlwind of motion, laughing with Maya and a small cluster of their friends. They looked so… integrated. Alex had classes, clubs, homework, and a whole existing social circle that seemed to demand every ounce of their attention. It was just that Sam, the new kid, the one who had been promised a guiding hand, was starting to feel like a forgotten footnote.

A shadow fell over Sam’s table. It was Chloe, a girl from their English class, her expression a mixture of tentative curiosity and something that looked a lot like pity. “Hey, Sam,” Chloe said softly, sliding into the seat opposite. “You okay? You’re always at this table.”
