Chapter 2
The First Ripple
Alex's good intentions are immediately challenged. An exciting invitation from Maya, Alex's long-time friend, pulls Alex away from a planned lunch with Sam. Alex forgets to text Sam, leaving Sam waiting alone.
The morning sun, a cheerful spill of liquid gold, had barely begun to warm the school corridors when Alex found themselves already a little breathless. It wasn't the usual rush to class; it was a different kind of hurriedness, a flutter of well-intentioned ambition that had taken root with the dawn. Yesterday’s promise to Sam, a quiet vow made with earnest eyes, felt like a newly planted seed, fragile yet full of potential. Alex imagined it already unfurling, a small green shoot reaching for the light.
The first bell’s soft chime was a gentle nudge, a reminder that the day had truly begun. Alex navigated the bustling hallways, a familiar ballet of dodging backpacks and sidestepping hurried conversations. A quick glance towards the new student seating area, where Sam was usually found, found it empty. A tiny, almost imperceptible prickle of unease, quickly smoothed over. Sam was probably just getting settled, Alex reasoned. There would be plenty of time.
Then, a familiar whirlwind of energy, a bright flash of pink and a cascade of laughter, swept into Alex’s orbit. Maya. Alex’s oldest friend, a supernova of social grace, was beaming, her eyes sparkling with an infectious excitement.
“Alex! You are not going to *believe* what I just heard!” Maya’s voice was a high, delighted trill, already drawing the attention of several nearby students. “The new arcade downtown is having a grand opening today! They’ve got all the latest games, and apparently, they’re giving away free tokens for the first hour!”
Alex’s mind
