The fluorescent lights of the cafeteria buzzed with their usual midday cacophony, a symphony of clanking trays, boisterous laughter, and the low murmur of a hundred conversations. Alex, however, felt adrift in the noise, a solitary island in a sea of familiar faces. Maya, radiant and surrounded by her usual entourage, waved them over, her smile a beacon in the swirling chaos. Alex navigated the crowded tables, a knot of unease tightening in their stomach. It wasn’t that they didn’t love Maya, or the easy comfort of their shared history. It was just that lately, Maya’s world, with its vibrant social calendar and effortless charm, felt increasingly distant from the quiet, fragile space Alex was trying to cultivate with Sam.

“Alex! Over here!” Maya’s voice cut through the din, warm and inviting. Alex slid into the seat beside her, the scent of her familiar perfume – a mix of citrus and something faintly floral – a comforting anchor. Maya launched into an animated retelling of a weekend party, her hands gesticulating wildly, her eyes sparkling with shared memories. Alex offered a smile, a nod, a murmured “Wow, that sounds amazing,” but their gaze kept drifting, scanning the room.
