The hum of the classroom had always been a comforting sound to Alex, a familiar rhythm that underscored the daily ebb and flow of school life. But lately, that hum felt a little different, tinged with a quiet anxiety that had settled deep in their chest. It was the anxiety of a promise made and, in the frantic scramble of weeks, largely unmet. The image of Sam’s hopeful, slightly uncertain face on that first day, the quiet sincerity of their own words – “I’ll help you, really. We’ll figure this out together” – echoed in Alex’s mind with an almost physical ache.

Today, however, felt like a turning point. It wasn’t a grand revelation or a dramatic intervention, but a quiet, determined shift within Alex. The previous chapter, with its tentative apologies and fragile bridge-mending, had left a lingering awareness, a deep-seated understanding that words, especially those offered with good intentions, carried a weight that couldn't be dismissed. Alex had spent the last few days replaying moments, not with self-recrimination, but with a clear-eyed recognition of the hurt they had inadvertently caused. Sam, who had arrived at Northwood High with so much vulnerability etched into their quiet demeanor, deserved better than the fleeting attention Alex had managed to offer.

The bell for lunch rang, a jarring sound that usually sent Alex scrambling towards Maya and their usual table. But today, Alex paused. Sam was packing their bag with that same careful, deliberate motion Alex had come to associate with them. Taking a deep breath, Alex walked over, a small, almost shy smile on their face.
