Grandpa introduces the flatcar, a car with no roof, perfect for big, heavy things like trucks or logs. Leo sees how it can help them carry special cargo for the detour.

The train rumbled on, but Grandpa suddenly pulled on the brakes. The whole train gave a gentle lurch, and I felt a thrill run through me. "What's happening, Grandpa?" I asked, my eyes wide. He smiled, his eyes twinkling. "Well, Leo, it looks like our usual route is blocked. We have a bridge that's out up ahead, so we'll need to take a different path."

My heart sank a little. I loved our usual route, and the idea of a detour felt like a hiccup in our grand adventure. But Grandpa’s calm voice always soothed my worries. "Don't you worry, Leo. Trains are clever things. We just need to find the right kind of car to help us with this new journey."

We climbed down from the engine cab, the ground feeling solid beneath my sneakers. The air smelled of coal smoke and something metallic, a scent that always made me feel excited. Grandpa led me along the side of the train, his hand warm on my shoulder. We passed the familiar passenger cars, their windows like a row of sleepy eyes, and then we came to a different kind of car.
