Chapter 9

Chapter 9 — The Gospel According to Lentils

Marija reflects on the cost of love and the people who destroy what they claim to cherish, drawing parallels between a news story about a man imprisoned for harming his family and her own journey of rebuilding after cancer. She discusses with Jonas how love that consumes rather than nurtures is not love at all, and connects this to the principle that true healing—like true love—does not devour. Dr. Petrova's office confirms receipt of Marija's voicemail agreeing to the case study, and Marija prepares for the first formal documentation session while grappling with the vulnerability of having her recovery examined. She runs through early winter conditions, continuing her fasting protocol, and finds herself thinking about the difference between being consumed by something and being sustained by it.

There was a story in the news this week. I won't give you the details because the details are not the point, and also because the details are grim in the way that only human stories can be grim—the kind of grim that makes you put down your coffee and stare at the wall and wonder not about the specifics but about the mechanism. A man who said he loved. A man who destroyed. The familiar arithmetic of passion turned possessive, devotion turned demolition. He ended up in prison, which is where the law puts people when the damage becomes too visible to ignore, and the people he said he loved ended up in places that don't have walls but are prisons all the same. Inside their own ribs. Inside the architecture of trust that was built wrong and now can't be unbuilt without tearing everything else down with it.

Jonas mentioned it over breakfast. Not the salacious parts—he has no patience for those—but the structural failure underneath. 'He said he loved them,' Jonas said, and his brow did that thing it does, the furrowing, the topographical map of concern. 'And maybe he believed it. Maybe love was the word he used when he meant ownership.' He looked at me across the table. 'There's a difference.'

'I know there's a difference.'
