Chapter 4

Chapter 4 — The Body Keeps Its Own Calendar

Marija uses the six-week waiting period to intensify her autophagy practices through extended fasting and harder running. Jonas struggles with her approach but begins showing quiet signs of engagement, researching autophagy on his own without admitting it. Marija experiences a vivid moment during a long run where she feels the signal in her body shift from ambiguous to something that resembles cellular repair rather than disease. Dr. Petrova calls with an unexpected request to meet in person before the scheduled six-week retest, leaving Marija uncertain whether the news is good or alarming.

Six weeks is a peculiar unit of time. Long enough to grow a habit or lose one. Short enough that you can see the end from the beginning, which sounds comforting but is actually its own form of torture when the thing at the end is a test result that could rearrange your life. I've waited for test results more times than I've waited for flights. At this point, I'm more anxious about boarding gates than biopsies, which tells you something about either my coping mechanisms or Lithuanian aviation infrastructure. Possibly both.

Fasting came first because it was the tool I understood most intimately. The one whose language I'd spent years learning, one hunger pang at a time.
