The fluorescent lights of the deserted science lab hummed, their sterile glow casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters across the polished linoleum floor. Hana’s breath hitched, a ragged sound swallowed by the suffocating silence. The air was thick with the faint, metallic tang of chemicals, a scent that now felt inextricably linked to terror. She clutched the small, tarnished silver locket in her hand, its cool surface a stark contrast to the frantic heat coursing through her veins. This was it. The missing piece, the undeniable proof, nestled within the intricate workings of a discarded microscope.

Akase’s locket. The one Hana had helped her pick out, a cheap, heartfelt gift for her seventeenth birthday. Akase had worn it constantly, a small symbol of their unbreakable bond. Hana had searched for it everywhere after… after Akase was gone. It had vanished, just like Akase herself, leaving a gaping void. But here it was, tucked away in a dusty drawer, alongside a small, worn photograph. A photograph of Akase, beaming, and a younger, softer-looking Kenji, their arms slung around each other's shoulders. The date etched on the back, a cruel whisper from the past, confirmed Hana’s deepest fears. They had been more than just friends. They had been lovers. And Kenji’s revenge, so cold and calculated, was for a love lost.

A sudden click echoed from the hallway, sharp and decisive. Hana froze, her heart leaping into her throat. Kenji. She had to be careful. She’d seen Kenji’s eyes linger on her more than once in the past few days, a predatory glint that sent shivers down her spine. Kenji knew. Hana knew Kenji knew. The stolen glances, the carefully worded questions about Hana’s whereabouts, the feigned innocence – it all pointed to a hunter who had finally sensed the prey was onto her.
