Hana receives an anonymous, cryptic message hinting at Kenji's guilt. Is it a warning from an ally, or another of Kenji's manipulative traps designed to mislead her further?
The fluorescent lights of the library hummed a mournful tune, a stark contrast to the hushed rustle of pages and the occasional whispered consultation. Hana traced the spine of a worn textbook, the cool leather a familiar comfort against her fingertips. But comfort was a luxury she could no longer afford. Every shadow seemed to lengthen, every quiet corner held the potential for a lurking threat. Akase’s absence was a gaping wound, and the killer, whoever they were, remained a phantom, a chilling whisper in the hallways of Akutumumtos High.
A folded piece of paper, stark white against the dark wood of the table, lay before her. It hadn’t been there when she’d sat down, and no one had approached her. Her heart gave a sudden, hard lurch. She glanced around, her gaze sweeping over the few other students engrossed in their studies. No one met her eyes. No one seemed to have noticed anything. With trembling fingers, she picked it up.
The paper was smooth, uncreased, and bore no markings other than the words scrawled in what looked like a hurried, almost desperate, hand.
