Master Kenji's enigmatic nature is challenged. His true intentions regarding the sword and the ancient evil are revealed.
The air in Master Kenji’s study hung thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something faintly metallic, like dried blood. Akira traced the intricate carvings on the ebony desk, her fingers catching on the familiar, unsettling patterns that mirrored the etchings on her sword. For weeks, Kenji had been her guide, his cryptic pronouncements and ancient texts a flickering lamp in the suffocating darkness of her quest. Yet, a gnawing unease had begun to coil in her gut, a serpent’s whisper that perhaps the lamp cast shadows as readily as it illuminated.
“You seek to sever a bond,” Kenji said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate from the very stones of his ancient house. He sat opposite her, his eyes, like polished obsidian, fixed on her face. He held a scroll, its edges frayed with time, but he made no move to unroll it. “A bond forged in blood and despair. But what if the severance itself is the true danger?”
Akira met his gaze, her own carefully schooled into a mask of stoic resolve. “The sword’s curse is a poison. It festers within me. I must be rid of it, Master. For my peace, if nothing else.”
