The silence in Elara’s small apartment felt heavier than usual, a thick, suffocating blanket woven from disappointment and the sharp edges of self-recrimination. Sunlight, usually a cheerful intruder, now seemed to mock her, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, each one a tiny, glittering reminder of how easily she’d been fooled, again. Liam was gone. Not in a dramatic, shouting match kind of way, but with a quiet, almost apologetic shrug that somehow managed to be more devastating. He’d said, with a practiced ease that made her stomach clench, that he wasn’t ready for what she wanted, that he’d thought he was, but he wasn’t. The words, so similar to others she’d heard before, landed like stones in the pit of her being.

She traced the rim of an empty teacup, her finger a shaky line against the ceramic. It wasn't just Liam, of course. It was the way he’d promised her the moon and stars, the way his easy charm had swept away her doubts, the way she’d eagerly leaned into his charisma, convinced this time would be different. This time, she’d told herself, she was wiser, more discerning. She’d seen the little inconsistencies, the times his stories didn’t quite align, the way he’d sometimes disappear for hours without a word. But she’d brushed them aside, convinced they were just quirks, minor imperfections in an otherwise brilliant tapestry. She’d wanted so desperately for him to be the exception, the one who wouldn’t break her heart in the same predictable, soul-crushing way.

Chloe’s worried texts had started to trickle in a week ago, gentle nudges disguised as casual check-ins. "Hey, haven't heard much from you. Everything okay?" and then, more pointedly, "Saw Liam at the cafe today. He seemed… preoccupied." Elara had brushed Chloe off, a familiar defensiveness rising. Chloe, bless her loyal heart, always worried. She’d seen Elara stumble before, and Elara didn’t want her friend to see her fall again. But now, Chloe’s concern felt like a prophecy fulfilled, a testament to the fact that some people saw the patterns even when Elara herself refused to.
