Chapter 4
A Clever Distraction
Ben devises a playful trick to outsmart Mr. Grumbles. He creates a diversion, allowing him to sneak past the watchful groundskeeper and continue his exciting treasure hunt.
The air in the attic had always held a certain mystique for Ben, a whisper of forgotten stories and dust motes dancing in stray sunbeams. But today, it hummed with a different kind of energy, a thrumming anticipation that vibrated in his fingertips. The map, unfolded and spread across the creaking floorboards, was a puzzle box in itself. Strange symbols, like tiny, coiled snakes and zig-zagging lightning bolts, dotted the parchment, interspersed with cryptic verses. He’d spent hours with his nose practically touching the paper, his brow furrowed in concentration, his tongue poking out from the corner of his mouth.
“Aha!” he’d finally exclaimed, a triumphant grin splitting his face. The riddle about the ‘weeping eye that never cries’ had finally yielded its secret: the old, moss-covered fountain in the park, its stone basin perpetually filled with water. And the ‘whispering giant that guards the path’ could only be the ancient oak tree at the edge of the woods, its branches so vast they seemed to sigh in the breeze. It was a trail of breadcrumbs, each clue leading to the next, and Ben felt a thrill course through him, the kind that made his stomach flutter like a trapped butterfly.
But the map, for all its intriguing clues, also led him to a formidable obstacle: Mr. Grumbles. The old groundskeeper, his face a roadmap of wrinkles and his voice like a rusty hinge, was a fixture in Ben’s life, a permanent fixture of disapproval. He patrolled the park and the woods with a vigilance that bordered on obsession, his broom a weapon and his stern gaze a deterrent to any youthful exuberance. Today, however, Mr. Grumbles seemed particularly intent on guarding the path that wound towards the ancient oak, the very path Ben needed to take.
