Chapter 5
Through Ancient Halls
The chase leads Maya and Pip through grand, echoing halls of the ancient Egyptian ruins. Pip’s quick movements create playful chaos, scattering sand and startling unseen creatures.
The air in the grand hall hung heavy and still, thick with the dust of millennia and the hushed whispers of forgotten kings. Sunlight, fractured into a thousand dancing beams by the narrow slits in the towering walls, painted fleeting patterns on the hieroglyph-covered stone. Maya, with her bandages trailing like a spectral train, bounded through this ancient space, her heart thrumming with a mixture of annoyance and a strange, burgeoning excitement. Pip, the tiny, iridescent scarab beetle, was a blur of emerald and gold, darting and weaving through the colossal columns that soared towards the unseen ceiling.
Each skittering movement of Pip’s many legs sent a puff of sand skittering across the polished floor, a tiny explosion of chaos in the otherwise serene tomb. Maya let out a frustrated huff, the sound echoing eerily in the cavernous expanse. "Oh, you little rascal!" she called out, her voice a dry rustle, like papyrus unfurling. "Will you not cease this game of tag?"
Pip, however, seemed to revel in the chase. He’d pause for a fraction of a second, his tiny antennae twitching, as if to mock her slow, shuffling pursuit, before zipping off again, a living jewel against the muted tones of the tomb. He’d scurry up a wall, his tiny claws finding purchase on the rough carvings, then drop down, landing with an almost inaudible click. Maya, despite her irritation, couldn’t help but be a little impressed by his agility. She, by contrast, felt like a clumsy giant, her ancient joints creaking with every lunge.
