Chapter 19
The Playful Duo
Maya and Pip become a legendary pair, known throughout the ancient ruins for their playful guardianship. Their adventures continue, always filled with laughter and discovery.
Maya stretched, a slow, creaking unfurling of linen bandages that had held her slumber for centuries. A peculiar tickle, persistent and maddening, wriggled beneath her wrappings. It wasn't the usual stiffness of long repose, nor the settling of dust that had become her constant companion. This was a lively, dancing sensation, as if a tiny, unseen sprite were playing tag across her ancient skin. She tried to ignore it, to sink back into the comforting darkness, but the itch was relentless. With a sigh that stirred the settled sand around her sarcophagus, Maya sat up.
The air, thick with the scent of millennia and the faint aroma of forgotten incense, did little to soothe her. She ran a bandaged hand over her chest, feeling the whisper-light movement beneath. It was definitely something alive. And it was definitely small. Her fingers traced the source of the annoyance, a tiny, hard bump that seemed to shimmy and shift with every attempt to locate it. Curiosity, a trait that had never quite faded even in her long sleep, began to outweigh her irritation.
Suddenly, with a burst of energy that sent a tremor through the sarcophagus, the source of the itch catapulted itself from beneath her bandages. It was a scarab beetle, no bigger than her thumbnail, its iridescent shell shimmering with hues of jade and obsidian in the dim light filtering through cracks in the tomb’s ceiling. It scuttled with astonishing speed, its tiny legs a blur against the stone floor.
